Once Again Upon a Time: Poem on KUOW

So many of us were saddened, upset and angry by what happened to Charleena Lyles here in Seattle last June. I wrote a poem about it and had the honor to have read it for KUOW as part of the station’s News Poet series. Library Lit: It Takes a Community

wordswest-library-signWordsWest kicks off Year 3 with poetry, prose and a new community reading library!  On September 21st, your Washington State Poet Laureate Tod Marshall will read his work along with short selections from returning readers such as former State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken, Seattle’s Civic Poet Claudia Castro Luna and West Seattle author Lyanda  Lynn Haupt and poet Lena Khalaf Tuffaha. Come celebrate the unveiling of a new library featuring a book by every author who has read at WordsWest. The WordsWest Community Reading Library will serve to promote authors as well as serve as an inspiring, free resource available for patrons of C & P Coffee Co. to read at their leisure while in the coffee shop. This is no average literary event, but then again, West Seattle is not your average community!

This evening is supported in part by a grant from Poets & Writers, Inc.

Tod Marshall is the Washington State Poet Laureate for 2016-18. Tod was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Wichita, Kansas. He directs the writing concentration and coordinates the visiting writers series at Gonzaga University where he is the Robert K. and Ann J. Powers Endowed Professor in the Humanities. His work has been published in many journals, including Narrative, The Southern Review, The American Poetry Review, The Iowa Review, Shenandoah, Boulevard, The Colorado Review, The Denver Quarterly, The Columbia Poetry Review, Poetry East, Poetry Northwest, Volt, Interim, The Canary, Willow Springs, Cutbank, The Georgia Review, The Kenyon Review, and elsewhere. Tod enjoys backpacking and fishing and spends about a month of every year in a tent.

Every third Wednesday, 7pm, at C & P Coffee Company, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to guided writing explorations. Each month we also host a community member to share his or her favorite poem as part of the Favorite Poem Project. On September 21, 2016, we’ll hear the favorite poem of Councilmember Lisa Herbold who represents District 1 (West Seattle/South Park) on Seattle’s City CouncilWordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw.
